The Sternum

The Sternum

The sternum (often referred to as the breastbone) is a flat, dagger shaped bone located in the middle of the chest. Along with the ribs, the sternum forms the rib cage that protects the heart, the lungs, and major blood vessels.

The sternum has three sections:

The manubrim, is located at the top.

The body, or blade, is located in the middle of the sternum.

The xiphoid process, or the “tip”, is located on the bottom of the sternum.
